Huawei P20 Lite is Huawei’s ultimate 2018 mid-range phone. The lighter versions of their original flagship phones have a lot of features and design that comes from the big flagship phones. Every year they get premium. Huawei P10 Lite had an incredible design and it finally brought the premiumness to the lite table. It had glass on the back and aluminum on the sides but still there was something missing. This time Huawei has completely nailed it.
The design of Huawei P20 Lite is absolutely incredible. It has a beautiful glass back that reflects colors. This phone is nothing less from their big Huawei P20 and be 20 Pro their flagship phones. It really does come close to that level when it comes to premium.
On the back is beautiful glass with fingerprint scanner and dual cameras with LED flash and nice Huawei logo. Unlike the P20 and P20 Pro, this one actually comes with a headphone jack which is amazing and for the first time the lite series has finally got the type C charging port. It also supports fast charging. Since the finger scanner is on the back we have a Huawei logo on front. Design-wise it’s absolutely top-notch.
Just like other 2018 phones this phone also follows the notch trend that is going on, thanks to the king of the notch Apple. The display does go all the way on the top it has 80% screen to body ratio. With the 5.8 inch display now it is a 1080p HD IPS display. The colors are pretty decent when it comes to indoor but in bright sunlight and outdoor conditions it’s not that great. It does have a lot of reflection but its a pretty decent display.
About the notch, it is not that noticable when video playing on the phone. If you go fullscreen it doesn’t actually take the full display. It doesn’t go beyond the notch, it just goes to that maximum limit. It give you a full screen experience without the notch interrupting the display.
Under the hood it comes with a Kirin 659 processor with 4 gigabytes of RAM. It’s actually the same chip as the Huawei Mate 10 Lite with very similar performance. Huawei P20 Lite comes with Android 8.0 Oreo version which is one of the latest versions of the Android with 64 gigabyte of internal memory. Out of that you can have 50.22 gigabyte free while still giving you the option for the microSD card slot for storing expansion.
Just like that mid-range phones from the past this is also having dual-sim capabilities.
The software experience of this phone is something that you would normally expect on a typical Huawei phone. That is the Emui which is very simple. You can app drawer or have full homescreen look. From the display settings you can actually change the resolution display from Full HD plus to 720p if you want to conserve more battery or increase performance when it comes to gaming. It also allows you to completely hide the navigation bar pretty much everywhere. It gives you an arrow and when you press that the navigation bar goes away and swipe up it reappears. Thanks to this you can have a full screen experience without worrying about the space.
There are some motion features like you can take a screenshot by swiping three fingers on the display. It also allows you to take a scroll screenshot which takes a screenshot of the full display as long as it go further. To stop it is just by touching the display.
Overall it’s a nice soft experience with a good processor combination. You will be satisfied with the fingerprint sensor performance as it unlocks pretty instantly. Huawei P20 Lite also comes with the software face unlock which you can also use if you don’t like the finger print scanner. But the fingerprint scanner will definitely be a more reliable and secure option.
The back camera is a 16 plus 2 megapixel camera combination similar to the Mate 10 Lite. It takes some decent pictures outdoor and does an okay job in the indoor environment as well. This camera is not a Leica camera and like the Huawei P20 or P20 Pro, it’s just a normal camera. It has all the features like the potrait mode, wide aperture mode and a couple of AI tricks. The front camera is definitely an upgrade on the Mate 10 Lite and is now bumped to 16 megapixel instead of 13 megapixels. It can shoot videos up to 1080p but not 4k for the lite phones. Generally it is a decent camera phone and it should be able to deliver some good photos in this price range.
The phone comes with 3000 mAh battery and thanks to the Kirin 659 processor combined with the not so hungry 1080p display. It is able to deliver a good battery life experience and can get you through the day without any problem. For the first time it does support fast charging which is one of the core basic features that every phone should have.
Huawei P20 Lite is truly the ultimate mid-range phone for it has everything going for in a 2018 phone. You get a beautiful premium design and the latest 2018 trend going on here as well. There is the 3.5 millimeter headphone jack, 2018 decent cameras, decent software and hardware performance.
